"This surgery has done so many things that has helped me. Before my surgery, I weighed 450 pounds. I had no self esteem, didn't want to be seen in public, felt uncomfortable around women, and always depressed. Now, a year out of the bariatric surgery, I have a completely different outlook on life. "I liked and respected Dr. Chiasson from our first meeting; this impression has only strengthened. He returns phone calls promptly. He has been concerned about my postsurgical care and believes what I tell him. There is a structured aftercare program with regular visits, lab work, consultations with Dr. Chiasson and Ms. Duke, and encouraged participation in the Tucson Weight Loss Support group (TUSWLS). He systematically and thoroughly addressed all surgical risks. On a 1 (extremely incompetent and uncaring) to 10 (extremely competent and caring), Dr. Chiasson receives a 10. I rate surgical competence higher than bedside... [Click here for more] manner. Without surgical competence, bedside manner is a moot concern. His bedside manner, however, is outstanding. His office staff is friendly, helpful, and caring. Although a busy office, there is no difficulty in making office appointments. I am always greeted by name. Dr. Chiasson always calls me from the waiting room and escorts me to the exam room. The bariatric coordinator, Ms. Duke, was there before and after surgery and made regular phone calls to check on my postop status. She was outstanding. I had difficulty drinking the protein shakes, and she gave me some of her own. I meet with her before every office appointment. She even called after my gallbladder surgery (at 14 weeks WLS postop)to see how I was progressing. She has been very supportive. Dr. Chiasson also performed my gallbladder surgery. I trust him as my surgeon..."

"I have been very impressed with Dr. Chiasson and his entire team at the Northwest Medical Center Surgical Weight Loss Program. Prior to surgery, he was very helpful in getting all of the required tests completed in a timely manner and answering all of the questions that I had. Though I am just one month post-surgery, I am impressed with the efforts to ensure that everything is going well and that my body is adjusting to the changes from WLS. He has a great office staff; all of the people are very kind and helpful. The WLS program is designed to be so much more than just the surgery. Just prior to my surgery, I met with the Surgical Coordinator, Gayle Duke, to review everything that was critical to know prior to surgery and at different stages of post-surgery life. They have put together... [Click here for more] a binder, kind of a WLS Bible, that very thoroughly covers what to do before and after surgery. It has been extremely helpful. For the first two weeks after surgery, Gayle called every day to see how I was feeling and to offer support. Now she calls once a week to make sure that everything is going well and to answer any questions I might have. Overall, I am very pleased with Dr. Chiasson, his support staff, and the entire WLS program."

What really impressed me is even on the days he was at another office/clinic and his PA came in to see me, he still came by later in the evening to check on me. He does have a very structured program, I think more so than some of the other docs. At least from what I've heard by talking to others. But I have no problems with that. He pulled no punches and gave both my husband and myself all the risks as well as the benefits. After the surgery, he went right out to talk to my husband. When I met him one on one for a consult, I was very distressed because he'd just weighed me, and I hadn't seen my actual weight in months. I began to cry, and he was very understanding. He told me: "This is a safe place. There is no shame here." He seemed very sincere and understanding. When I was anxious right before my surgery, Dr. Chiasson rested his hand on my shoulder and told me that they were going to take good care of me, and I believed him. And, they did! He did exploratory surgery and found a obstruction which he had to do open surgery on to repair. "I had my initial consult with Dr. Burpee on 3/12/2004 and I liked him very much. He is very personable, knowledgeable, reassuring, and confident. His office staff was awesome as well, very friendly & easy to talk to. I left the appt. feeling very confident about my decision to pursue the gastric by-pass. My actual surgery was performed on 7/28/2004 without a hitch. Dr. Burpee did an excellent job and was very diligent with my follow-up care. I'm very grateful for having found such a skilled and compassionate surgeon. About 1 year post-op I moved from Tucson to Chandler, and therefore I'm no longer a patient of Dr. Burpee. Dr. Burpee is very clear about the surgical options, what he recommends and why, and what he doesn't recommend on a case by case basis. He makes absolutely sure that the patient and the patient's support person clearly understand the risks involved, and how important it is to follow the rules. One of the things that is terribly important to remember is the concept of commitment. If a patient is approaching the surgical tool as a panacea to "cure" his fat problem, I really believe Dr. Burpee would thank him for thinking of him, and send him on his way. In my opinion, Dr. Burpee has more integrity in this area than many other doctors I have heard about. I respect him for this. I had my surgery and had absolutely no complications. I healed quickly, and am moving to a new me at a pace that surprises me. It's exciting and humbling at the same time. I am so grateful to Dr. Burpee and his team...
